Little did the early crowd at Aussie Stadium know that the Jersey Flegg clash between foundation clubs South Sydney and North Sydney would be the most exciting match of the day.

2 minutes into the match Bears captain Mitch Finnigan scored wide giving Norths an early lead of 4-0.

Souths however hit back with a sustained attach but were unable to break the Bears defence.

At the 18th minute mark Bears hooker Tim Woobine shoot through and scored leaving the Rabbits reeling with a 10-0 lead.

The Rabbitohs however finally broke through the Bears defence with a potential length of the field try. With what coach Josh White called "an outstanding tackle" Bears centre Josh Lewis chased the Rabbit on the run tackling him right on top of the try-line forcing him to lose the pill and stooping the try.

It was not only a great chase and tackle but extremely important to the final result, Souths running in a quick try 5 minutes before the end of the first half making the score 10-4 to the Bears.

Norths had another good start in the second half when second rower and captain Mitch Finnigan scored yet again making it 16-4.

Then Souths over the space of 10 minutes ran in two trys; at the 11th minute mark to make it 16-10, then at the 14th to make it 16 all.

In an exciting final 10 worthy of any grade Norths half Brett Law got himself into position to achieve a field gold making the score 17-16.

With Four minutes to go Souths appeared to have scored when the referee called a forward pass. Then in what appeared to be a harsh decision the Rabbits, on the attack, received a penalty for a player tackled without the ball and took a kick to the left of in front.

"I couldn't watch, I had my hands over my face" said coach White as did many others in the crowd.

The kick hit the upright and missed as The Bears finished played out the final minutes in attack on the Bunnies try line.

"We needed a game like that" said Coach Josh White. "It was good to get the win".

Josh named Captain Mitch Finnigan, second rower Lee Tamaari, forward Cheyne Tickle and hooker Tim Woobine as standouts and made special mention of Josh Lewis' important and successful chase and tackle.
