The second leg of the annual Frank Hyde Cup was played out on Saturday
between the two fundation clubs of North Sydney and Newton. In a well
contested game the Jets ran out winners to take the Cup for the year
having also won the first of three matches played on 21st February.
In the first half The Bears fought hard to stop a strong attack from
the
Jets with the Jets just winning the tusel 14-4.
At half time the crowd was mesmerised by the an appearence from Norths
and Newton ledgend Frank Hyde himself as he eloquently spoak of his
concern of the direction of football administration and treated them to
his rendistion of "Danny Boy".
In the second half dropped ball and general errors led to the Jets to
run in more trys. The BEars got back into the game however with an
ispirational try from Bears skipper Ben Black. Then another try from
Scot McLean.
Three prominant Bears players suffered illness prior to the weekend but
North Sydney Coach Gary Larson believes it was really errors that
finally led to Newtown finally running away with the match in the last
ten minuetes to win 42-20.
Gary Larson also claimed "Ben Fisher worked himself into the ground,
Namila Davuitook the ball forward and Paddy Williams is just a great
worker." Gary also named Matt Mirabito another stand out.
The Bears next match is a big one against the Parramatta Eels. But
coach Larson believes "They can be beaten".
Newtown 42 (A Duncan 3, D Hall 2, S Helu, C Ly, B Veau tries T Barnes 5
goals) defeated North Sydney 20 (T McKenzie, B Black, S McLean, C Hill
tries S McLean, N Smith goals).
