It was a sight that had not graced a League match at North Sydney Oval
for 3 years as the official North Sydney Bears Cheer Girls made their
first appearance for the Year as the Bears Premier League and Jersey
Flegg teams both recorded fine wins against Western Suburbs.
As The Premier League team took the field they were faced with a
different game from their previous outings. After an early try to the
Magpies the game developed into a tightly fought first half as
the Bears forward pack stepped up to the task proving they had the
maturity and talent to handle any style of play.
At the 35 min mark Captain Ben Black made another of his inspirational
trys running 40 metres to score finishing the first half 6-all.
A more exciting second half and another early try by Wests put them
back in front 10-6. But Norths were not phased as they muscled up again
to grab control of play. The Bears scored 3 trys in the half. With 25
min to go talented Hooker Ben Fisher scored and with the help of Centre
Scott McLean's conversion took the score to 12-10.
Five minutes later centre Christian Hill scored making it 16-10 and
with 15 min left on the clock second rower Matt Mirabito went over to
make it 22-10 with Scott's conversion.
A nerve racking final saw Wests on the attach scoring a converted try
to make it 22-16. Ben Black made an attempt at a field gold and missed
but the Bears were able to hold the Magpies out in the final 5
finishing the match with possession.
"The Boys are putting the opposition off guard by doing unexpected
things" said Coach Gary Larson. "Our biggest danger at the moment is
complacency" Gary added. While Greg Florimo felt they "Showed patience
and completed their sets, nothing fancy and showed maturity".
When asked for his standouts coach Larson replied "David Letele is
getting better every week, Matt Thurston worked very hard, Ben Fisher
and the whole forward pack put in".
Matt Thurston received a players player award for his effort.
For Jersey Flegg Coach Josh White their match was special as he played
the balk of his football career at Western Suburbs. "It was a
good win over my old home team". Josh also had stints at Canterbury and
Illawarra and was a Parramatta Junior.
It was an impressive win by the boys who finished the first half 22-6
in front. After falling into a hole in the second allowing the Magpies
in for 2 trys the team rallied to keep the Wests to 16 points. Final
score am impressive 30-16.
The crowd were entertained by some magnificent trys from; Chris Condon,
Bryce Poisel, Jacob Martin, Lee Tamaari, Sema Mataora and Josh Lewis.
With golds by Lee Tamaari (2) and crowd favourite Johnny Russell.
Coach White named Five eighth and players player award winner Bryce
Poisel as a standout as well as John Russell, "He works hard week in
week out, it's just his style of play".
"The Boys showed improvement" Josh said. "We're not making too much
noise. We gave the boys a goal to get in to the top eight and that's
were we are".
Both the Jersey Flegg and Premier League teams have a bye next weekend
with the Flegg to play the Central Coast Rip the following week and the
Premier League will play Newtown in the second leg of the Frank Hyde
Cup.
On the bye Josh White felt "The bye is good. We have a few injuries".
Also The Flegg has 3 good quality players yet to return from injury.
Matt Loftus, Nathan Wilson (a new recruit from Penrith) and lock Nathan
Ward currently out with a shoulder injury.
In other matches The Bears had a close loss in the Harold Matthews
20-16 to Canterbury and the SG Ball lost 56-4 to the Bulldogs. This was
the final round of the junior rep comps.
